Sunday Talk with Taigen Leighton

Taigen Leighton is founder and Dharma Teacher at Ancient Dragon Zen Gate in Chicago. He is a Dharma heir of Tenshin Reb Anderson in the Suzuki Roshi lineage of San Francisco Zen Center. Taigen is the author of many books, including Faces of Compassion: Classic Bodhisattva Archetypes and Their Modern Expression; Zen Questions: Zazen, Dogen, and the Spirit of Creative Inquiry; and Just This is It: Dongshan and the Practice of Suchness. He also has translated numbers of Zen texts, including Dogen’s Extensive Record and Cultivating the Empty Field. Taigen has a Ph.D. from Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, where he continues to teach Buddhist Studies online.

He will join us on Sunday, September 3rd to share his talk entitled The Transcendent Practices of Bodhisattvas.

This talk will introduce the ten paramitas, or transcendent practices, of the bodhisattva tradition. These are generosity, ethical conduct, patience, energy, meditation, wisdom, skillful means, vow, powers, and knowledge. Each of these are complex, intimate studies that apply in daily life interactions as well as in zazen, and work especially in combination with each other. We will focus on the practices of patience and skillful means and their challenges and benefits.

Taigen will be using the book Faces of Compassion: Classic Bodhisattva Archetypes and Their Modern Expression by Taigen Daniel Leighton; forward by Joan Halifax in his talk. In honor of the event, 12 copies of the book will be available for $15.50 (usually $18.95). Taigen will also be happy to sign books for people.
